Circadian Optics from Shark Tank

Circadian Optics shark tank

Sunlight is as essential to physical and mental health as diet or exercise. Our busy routines hardly give us any time to walk outside and absorb some natural sunlight, as we work all day in artificial lights in our dark, air-conditioned offices.

Failing to spend time in sunlight disrupts our natural body needs, making us exhausted. It also leads to bad health.

Circadian Optics aims to bring the Sun to your desks! That’s right. The therapy lamps provide the same brightness as the Sun and allow you to revel in its energy without stepping out of your house or office.

What is Circadian Optics?

The bright light therapy lamps give you the same brightness as the Sun.

It mimics the color and brightness of the Sun, and using the lamp for a minute is enough to set your body clock for the rest of the day.

Circadian Optics looks like having a mini Sun right on your desks. The LED lamps have a great battery and last up to 50,000 hours to provide a uniform and full spectrum light.

What Makes Them Unique?

Circadian Optics aims to bring more light and sunshine into people’s life. They are stylish and UV-free, and easy to use. The lamps provide the recommended light to help regulate sleep, beat the winter blues, and improve focus and energy.

Are They Still an Active Company?

The company successfully sells its products on Amazon and has received many positive customer reviews.

How Did the Shark Tank Pitch Go?

Amber Leong appeared on the show seeking $750,000 for 10% stakes in her company, Circadian Optics. She explained how her therapy lamps allow you to absorb the bright light that mimics the color and light intensity of the Sun.

Rohan asked Amber about her background and the inspiration behind the product.

Amber replied that she was originally from Malaysia but currently living in Minnesota. Despite seeing the Sun for 6 months out of the year in Minnesota, she couldn’t soak up much sunlight because of her corporate job.

She couldn’t see the Sun for 12 months of the year, and the lack of exposure to the sunlight was affecting her health. Due to the lack of sunlight in her life, she started feeling sluggish at work and couldn’t sleep well at night.

She started reading about the relation of circadian rhythm to sunlight and bought a light therapy lamp for herself. It improved her health. However, the big fluorescent design of the lamp called teasing from her coworkers, as most of her desk was taken up by the huge lamp.

She realized that the market didn’t have an appropriate therapy lamp that could be used in a corporate setting.

Rohan again asked about her sales since she was asking for such a high valuation for her company. Amber responded that her lifetime sales were $7.4 million. Last year, she made $4 million in sales. All lamps were sold online, and her profit margins were 70%.

Mark observed that since Amber was doing fine with her sales, there must be a bigger reason she came looking for investment on the show. She mentioned that last year she made $652,000 in profits, and that year she was hoping to make $5.6 million in sales. On that, her profits would be approximately $1.3 million.

Lori asked what she wanted a Shark for. Amber said she currently had a $5 million company, so she needed a strategic partner to take it to the next level. Her sales were only through the online platform, and to get into retail, she needed help.

Lori asked her about her backstory, and Amber revealed that growing up, she lived in a poor household and always wanted to move to America. When it was time for Amber to go to college, her parents helped by taking out their retirement funds and borrowing money from family and friends to send Amber to school on a one-way ticket. But nine months after coming to America, Amber was diagnosed with toxic shock syndrome, but her parents couldn’t come to visit her due to poor finances and not having an American visa, even though she had a 50% survival chance. After she survived, she came out on the other side with a new ambition to make the most out of the gift of life that she had been given.

She got her degree, landed a job, and sent as much money back home. Her story moved all the Sharks to tears, and they all applauded her for being courageous to pursue her American dream.

Lori only wanted to invest in the company if another Shark partnered with her. She asked to discuss her offer with Mark.

Meanwhile, Kevin and Barbara discussed among themselves as Rohan announced that he was going out since he could not bring much value to the company.

Lori said that she and Mark would give her the $750,000 for 20% equity, and Kevin and Barbara offered the same. Lori said she would give her an extra $50,000 to send back to her parents. Amber happily accepted Lori and Mark’s offer.
