CreaClip is a plastic leveler that can be used to cut one’s own hair at home. Mai Lieu of Honolulu, Hawaii, invented CreaClip and pitched her business in May 2016 on Shark. The CreaClip isn’t Lieu’s only product. She distributes CreaNails (nail stencils) and CreaLash (a shield for applying mascara), among other things, under the name CreaProducts. She walked into the Tank looking for a $200,000 investment in exchange for a 10% stake in the company. Lori Greiner negotiated a deal with her for $200k in exchange for 22.5 percent.
CreaProducts on Shark Tank
In Shark Tank episode 729, entrepreneur, speaker, and author Mai Lieu pitches her idea to the Sharks about her worldwide flourishing brand, CreaProducts. The CreaClip, Lieu’s most well-known invention and product, is a clip that enables consumers to give themselves a layered, salon-quality hair cut at home. She employs a clip method that uniformly combs and distributes the hair while cutting, with a lock to keep it in place.
Lieu also sells a variety of other items, including CreaNails and CreaLash. Her CreaNails nail stencils are intended to cover the fingers, preventing undesired nail polish from getting all over them. CreaLash is a little shield that protects mascara from going onto parts of your face that should not have mascara, which she effectively funded on KickStarter in 2014. She also sells Risque, a different product line for the feet. It is as sensual as lingerie, except it is designed for the comfort of your feet that consists of lacy, sensual slip-on foot stockings.
Mai entered the Shark Tank with an offer of 10% in exchange for $200,000 in cash. She showed off the CreaClips by clipping her own bangs and hair in front of the Sharks, who were skeptical, until she finished, demonstrating that the clips work flawlessly.
She then gave everyone samples of CreaNails stencils and CreaLash, two of her other products. The Sharks were impressed, and Kevin O’Leary inquired about the current sales. Mai’s main product, CreaClips, had sold $500,000 in 2019. On YouTube, she has over 85,000 subscribers and over 20 million views. She sold 150,000 products in a span of a week after her video went viral. The original CreaClip is priced at $39.99 on Amazon. Mai is able to generate 66% profit on her product line.
On Shark Tank, Mai was offered a 25% discount on the $200,000 prize by Lori. However, Mai insisted on 20% as she expected to generate $800,000 in sales that year, but Lori believed that the products still required some engineering. In exchange for the amount of labor they would have to put in, she felt that a 25% stock stake would be appropriate to which Mai gave a thoughtful nod. Lori noticed Mai was having trouble and offered to meet her halfway and made a 22.5 percent bid. Mai thought about it and informed her she would take the opportunity. Mai was eager to team up with Lori.
Update on CreaProducts on Shark Tank
Lori’s offer never went through, but the Shark Tank influence boosted CreaProducts’ sales by a substantial margin. Mai is still working on expanding her business and online presence. Her self-help cosmetics application and hair cutting products are allowing her to fulfill her dream of helping her parents.
CreaProducts Prior to Shark Tank
Mai Lieu’s family was fortunate to flee the Vietnam War when she was just four years old. Her family was poor, and her parents had to work long hours to support her. Mai made the decision that she needed to compensate them in some way. As a result, Mai created her CreaProducts line after working as a hairstylist for 20 years.
Mai has been quite busy since her appearance on Shark Tank. According to CreaProducts Instagram account, traffic to her site exploded after the program aired, and her sales volume increased by a whopping 5000 percent.
Mai Lieu was also the cover girl for the 2017 Honokaa pinup calendar and has been experimenting with motivational speaking in addition to running her business. She gave a business talk in Calgary, Canada, in August of 2016.
